Profiles and Bios

If you are a member of the 1962 graduating class, or would have been if you had stayed at Wheat Ridge High, we would really like you to create a profile and tell something about yourself. You can always update your profile with current information. Your address, phone number and email address are not visible to anyone other than yourself and the website administrator. You can contact other Classmates through the 'Send This Person a Message' link below their profile.

This page has a 'Where Are They Now' button which, when clicked, displays a map of the cities and states where registered classmates live. You might be living near someone and not know it!

Check out the 'Sort' and 'Search' functions. The more classmates that register, the more handy these features will become.

Your registration helps attract other classmates to the site. The effectiveness of the website is a direct correlation to the number of classmates who register. Registering also enables you to post to the Message Board.

I live in Sacramento, California, and count myself fortunate to have a pleasant home next to the American River Parkway, a thirty-mile natural area host to deer, turkeys, coyotes, and the occasional rattle-snake, as well as dense standsof oak and cottonwoods that line the river.  I have spent many years riding the superb bike trail (one of the best in the country), walking the horse paths with my dogs, and watching the salmon that come up the river to spawn.  My job at CSU, Sacramento, is just twelve miles downstream, but I admit that I am not well organized enough to ride to class and get there on time!

My family moved to Sacramento in the summer of 1962; however, with a scholarship to DU, I stayed on in Colorado, adding a year in Mexico City and another in Bogota before joining the westward migration, along with my brothers and grandparents.  Long stints of teaching, study, and research abroad have punctuated my years in California, but family has always been an equal draw.  My former husband and I (Dan Calvert, WHS 58) moved to Sacramento from Morelia, Michoacan, in order to help raise his two youngest daughters as well as my brother Dick's young twins.  My parents, Vaughn and Joyce, lived to ripe old age; their home in Sacramento was an anchor for all the family.

Education was always my calling; by age eight I knew I wanted to master Spanish, if possible, as well as to learn everything I could about Mexico.  After teaching Jr. High and bilingual pre-school in a migrant labor camp, I headed for UC, Berkeley, where I took my Ph.D. in linguistics, folklore, and anthropology. I am an anthropology professor at CSUS, teaching linguistic and cultural anthropology as well as courses on Mexico and Latin America.  Retirement beckons, but, so far, not nearly so sweetly as do the students, whose energy and ethusiasm keep me young.

What's a favorite high school memory: Spanish club, music and theater events, football games, making movies with Buddy, David, and Diana
Which faculty members do you best remember: Mr. McWilliams, Mrs. Tenney, Mrs. Newnam, Mr. Roberts
What was fun to do in Wheat Ridge during your high school years: driving around town with my friends

Comment: During high school I had no plans to attend college but after being laid off from my first "real" job I attended Colorado State University in 1963.  Through the years I also attended Metropolitan State College and Red Rocks and Front Range Community Colleges.  My entire career was as a secretary; my last employment was with the City of Westminster (1976-1991).

The summer of 1963 I married my first husband and we had two daughters; we divorced in 1966.  I married my second husband in 1967 and we stayed together for over 13 years (happy for the most part); we divorced in 1980.  After two tries I had no intention of a third marriage but in 1989 I married my current husband, James Black; we will celebrate 23 years this summer.  Jim was a Professional Engineer and Registered Land Surveyor and retired in 2004 after 20 years with the City and County of Broomfield as Community Development Director.  When we married our four children served as witnesses.  Unfortunately we have lost all three of our daughters: his daughter (1971-1994) died in an auto accident, my oldest daughter (1964-2000) died from a rare lung disease, and my youngest daughter (1965-2012) recently died from a heart attack due to hypertension.  Our remaining son/stepson lives in Federal Heights with his wife, daughter (age 7), and son (age 2).  After completing degrees from CU and DU he got itchy feet and traveled through Europe for a time but ended up in Taiwan teaching English to Chinese children and where he met his wife.  He has his MSW and works with families who have substance abuse problems, and he and his wife recently opened a Chinese language school in Broomfield.  My youngest daughter gave me three grandchildren: Jessica (27 in June) lives in Nebraska with her husband and my two great-grandsons (ages 3 and almost 2); Marc (21 in Sep) is in the Air Force stationed in Florida and just married last March; and Amy (16 in Aug) lives in Colorado Springs and this fall will begin her sophomore year in high school.

Jim and I are beginning to feel the effects of the aging process and no longer are able to do all the things we used to.  He has COPD and last fall I had a minor stroke that continues to annoy my left foot.  Since 1991 I have spent -- and still do spend -- many, many hours pursuing my interest in family genealogy.  We reside with our two cats in Westminster in the house I have now been in for the last 36 years and we have no plans to leave until God says it's time to move on.  I hope everyone has a fantastic reunion!

It's interesting to read about everyone - thanks to Scott for setting this up. Here is my own timeline:

66: graduated from MIT (physics)

71: PhD from MIT (physics)

71 - 73: postdoctoral fellow at Univ. of Toronto

73 - 75: research fellow at California Institute of Technology

75 - 85: Argonne National Lab. (Chicago area) - research in magnetic confinement fusion

83 - 84: Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. (visitor)

86 - present: Lawrence Livermore National Lab. (San Francisco area) - laser-related physics, including inertial confinement fusion.

Dolly and I have two fine sons. We've been fortunate to have enjoyed California's beauty and climate (despite the state's oddities).

I'm sorry that I can't make the reunion (2012), but I hope that everyone has a splendid and rewarding time.

(Update 2022) I retired from Lawrence Livermore several years ago but have continued to work there part time. Still enjoying CA's scenery and weather; glad that my house hasn't burned down or been targeted by an earthquake.
