Duncan Frederick (Duncan) Harding
1944-03-30 2002-12-23Duncan was one of my best friends in junior high, and still very good friends in high school. He was the smartest guy I knew - we collected insects together and hung out. In the 8th grade I think he sort of had an epiphany about life, and realized that directing his energy toward doing well in school was not very productive for him (though he still did well.) He was reading a college biology textbook at that time, and had already taught himself algebra several years earlier. I think he went to college at Baylor, but I lost track of him. In the 1990's somehow my parents found an address for him and I tried contacting him to no avail. After several letters/Xmas cards, his wife called me from Brooklyn NY. She was from Puerto Rico as I remember, and told me it was useless to keep sending cards as several years earlier he'd left for work one morning and she never saw him again, though thout she saw him standing across the street one day. I believe she said they had two sons. I'd always suspected he'd pulled an Ambrose Bierce to Mexico, and was somewhat disappointed to learn he'd died in Ohio. Life can be strange, yet very mundane. But many good childhood memories of Duncan.
tribute by Peter WilcoxI remember Duncan helping me with Latin translations in the home room period before Latin class. Once I volunteered to type a term paper for him, which included many observations in French (Duncan knew many, many languages) but it was a a disaster for me as he sat by waiting for me to finish his paper. A beginning touch-typist doesn't do French very well!
